You become a carport dealer by applying to the dealer programs of steel carport makers that deliver to your area, such as [American Steel Carports](https://www.americansteelinc.com/become-a-dealer/), [Eagle Carports](https://www.eaglecarports.com/dealer-portal-request) and [Safeguard Metal Buildings](https://safeguardmetalbuildings.com/become-a-dealer/). Once approved, you get into their dealer portal, set up a lot with display units, and sell from their price sheets while they build and install the order.

## The steps, in order

1. Find the makers that deliver and install in your area. Safeguard points applicants to its service area page to see where you can sell.
2. Apply on each maker's become-a-dealer page. Eagle reviews your portal request and emails your login once approved. Safeguard asks about your business, your service area and whether you run online or on a lot.
3. Call your state's dealer licensing office and your state's tax office. Ask whether selling buildings takes a dealer licence or a sales tax permit, and what it costs. Get the answer in writing before you sign a lease.
4. Find the lot. Call the city or county zoning office with the address and ask if display units are allowed there. Pick a busy road, and get the lease terms and the zoning answer before you pay a deposit.
5. Pick your makers and sign. Safeguard lets you stock inventory or sell through its online ordering, so ask every maker which setup you get.
6. Set up the display units and learn each maker's price sheet and quote tool well enough to quote a customer on the lot, start to finish.
7. Take the first quote, collect the down payment, and follow up until the customer says yes or no.

### Ask each maker before you sign

- What is the lead time from order to delivered and installed?
- Who fixes a failed install, and who pays?
- Who holds the customer's deposit, you or the maker?
- What is your commission or margin on each unit, and when do you get paid?
- Does the maker back rent-to-own, and is the contract yours or theirs?

Get every answer in writing. These are the points that cost a new dealer money when they go wrong.

## Selling is not installing

A dealer sells buildings and handles the customer. An installer builds them on site. Ads for installers look like dealer pages, so check which one you're reading. [American Steel Carports](https://www.americansteelinc.com/blog/installer-crews/) says its installer subcontractors supply their own vehicles, tools and lodging, and work on commission. [Elephant Structures](https://www.elephantstructures.com/installer-jobs/) offers company installer and independent contractor roles. If you want to sell off a lot, those aren't your jobs.

## Rent-to-own: check your state first

Rent-to-own is regulated by statute in 47 states, according to [the APRO state statutes index](https://www.rtohq.org/rent-to-own/state-statutes/), read on 2026-08-01.

The rules differ by state, and so does the answer on whether a building payment plan counts as rent-to-own. Talk to a lawyer in your state before you quote a monthly payment. A contract written wrong can cost you the sale and the unit.

## Put tracking on your site before the first ad

Your first customers come from Marketplace, Google and walk-ins, and you'll pay for the first two. Install a Meta pixel and Google Analytics 4 or Google Tag Manager first, so you can see which ad brought in each quote. You can do it in an afternoon, before you have a lot to pay for.

Here is how we measured it. On 2026-08-01 we scanned the home pages of 220 sites from our research into lot-based dealers, mostly dealers plus a few agencies that sell to them. Of the 182 sites that loaded, 26.4% had no Meta pixel, no Google Analytics 4 and no Google Tag Manager in their home page code.

Those dealers are paying for ads they can't trace. Don't start that way.
